Automatically Play Videos on Webpage: Guide to Video Autoplay Settings
Automatically playing videos on your website can enhance visitor engagement, but it's important to implement them correctly. Here's what you need to know about video autoplay functionality.
Video Autoplay Basics
- Video blocks support autoplay for directly uploaded videos
- Only one autoplaying video per page is recommended
- Video banners and GIFs autoplay by default
- Mobile devices may restrict autoplay except for video banners
Browser Autoplay Policies
Most modern browsers restrict video autoplay to improve user experience:
- Chrome: Blocks autoplay for videos with sound
- Safari & Firefox: Block autoplay with sound but allow user setting customization
- Users can typically modify their browser settings to enable autoplay
Enabling Autoplay for Uploaded Videos
- Add a video block
- Upload your video
- Enable the Mute toggle
- Turn on the Autoplay toggle
Note: Muting is required before enabling autoplay.
Third-Party Video Autoplay
For videos hosted elsewhere, modify the embed code:
- YouTube: Add
?autoplay=1
to URL (use&autoplay=1
if URL already contains?
) - Vimeo: Add
?autoplay=1
to URL - Other services: Contact video host for specific instructions
Special Cases
Background Videos:
- Autoplay by default
- Always loop without sound
Index Gallery Support (Version 7.0):
- Autoplay supported in Momentum and Pacific template families
- Grid index pages support autoplay only in gallery pages
Important Considerations:
- Multiple autoplay videos will play simultaneously (except Vimeo)
- Mobile autoplay is limited
- Browser settings may override autoplay preferences
- Always test autoplay functionality across different browsers and devices
