Most link issues on Squarespace occur due to URL errors. Here's how to identify and fix common problems:

Link Leading to Login Screen

This happens when using an editing-area URL (containing "/config#/"). These URLs only work for logged-in users. Fix this by using the public-facing URL instead.

Links to Logged-in Version

If you're logged into Squarespace, clicking links with your built-in domain shows the editing view. Visitors will see the public version. To prevent visitors from accessing your built-in domain, hide it from search engines.

404 Errors

These occur when URLs change or contain typos. To fix:

  • Review and update all outdated links manually
  • Set up URL redirects to point to new pages

Wrong Domain Name Display

If links show your built-in domain (example.squarespace.com) instead of your custom domain:

  • Reset links by reselecting pages in the link editor
  • Ensure your preferred domain is set as primary

Fixing External Web Address Links:

  1. Copy the target URL from your browser
  2. Test in a private/incognito window
  3. Update the link through the link editor
  4. Test again in private browsing

Fixing Internal Site Content Links:

  1. Open the link editor
  2. Use the URL tab to search for your page/product
  3. Select the correct internal page
  4. Test in private browsing

Category/Tag Links

Remember that categories and tags are case-sensitive. Match the exact capitalization when creating these links (e.g., "Recipe" vs "recipe").

Imported Content Links

For content imported from other platforms:

  • Reset old links using Squarespace's link editor
  • Set up URL redirects for outdated links
  • Search for corresponding pages rather than manually typing URLs

Anchor Links

For page-jump functionality, use Squarespace's built-in anchor link system or follow platform-specific guidelines for manual implementation.
