Setting up Google Search Console: A Guide to Site Authentication

Verify your website in Google Search Console to improve its visibility in search results and monitor performance. This free tool helps manage your site's presence in Google Search.

Before Authentication:

  • Remove any passwords from your homepage
  • Ensure your domain is properly connected
  • Wait 72 hours after connecting a custom domain
  • Have an active Google account
  • Note: Trial sites cannot be verified

Steps to Connect Google Search Console:

  1. Access Analytics:
  • Navigate to Home menu > Analytics
  • Click "Search keywords"
  • Select "Connect"
  • Sign in with your Google account
  • Grant necessary permissions
  • Allow up to 72 hours for data population

View Keywords:

  • Check the Google tab in Search Keywords panel
  • Access detailed analytics at search.google.com/search-console/

Request Site Indexing:

Option 1: Submit Sitemap

  • Select your site from properties menu
  • Click "Sitemaps"
  • Enter sitemap URL
  • Click "Submit"

Option 2: URL Inspection Tool

  • Select your site from properties menu
  • Click "URL inspection"
  • Enter page URL
  • Click "Request Indexing"
  • Repeat for additional pages

Domain Authentication Details:

  • Works with Squarespace domains or custom domains
  • Authenticates both HTTP and HTTPS versions
  • Requires active and properly connected domains
  • Reconnect if primary domain changes

Common Issues:

  • Robots.txt warnings are normal
  • "Connected Account Disabled" requires reconnection
  • Custom domain authentication needs 72-hour waiting period

For optimal results, monitor your Search Console regularly and address any issues promptly to maintain good search visibility.

Note: Allow time for Google to process indexing requests. Changes in search results are not immediate and depend on Google's crawling algorithms.
