Domain transfers involve moving your domain name registration from one provider to Squarespace. Here are the essential things you need to know:

Transfer Requirements:

  • Domain must have a TLD compatible with Squarespace
  • Domain must be unlocked
  • 60 days must have passed since registration or last transfer
  • DNSSEC records must be removed before transfer

Timing and Cost:

  • Transfer time varies from 1 to 15 days
  • Transfer is free, but requires one-year renewal payment
  • Renewal fee depends on your domain's TLD

Important Considerations:

  • Website content does not transfer with the domain
  • Email service may experience temporary downtime
  • SSL certificates will be issued after transfer completion
  • Temporary site downtime may occur during transfer
  • Expired domains can transfer within 30-day grace period

After Transfer:

  • You remain the domain owner
  • Domain management moves to Squarespace
  • Registration period can be extended after transfer completion
  • Previous provider account can be cancelled
  • Browser cache may need clearing to see new site

Email Handling:

  • MX records can transfer to maintain existing email service
  • Email accounts stay with original provider
  • Option to migrate to Google Workspace through Squarespace
  • Backup important emails before transfer

Subdomains:

  • Cannot transfer independently
  • Must transfer main domain first
  • Can create new subdomains after main domain transfer
  • No additional cost for subdomain creation

If transfer fails, Squarespace will notify you via email and show the transfer as canceled in the domain control panel.
