When you're starting with Squarespace, you can purchase a domain before creating a website. Your domain will connect to a clean, ad-free placeholder page until you're ready to build your site.

Your placeholder page features a minimalist design with your domain name centered and a Squarespace logo in the corner. While you can't customize this temporary page, it securely holds your domain.

To purchase a domain:

  1. Visit domains.squarespace.com
  2. Search for available domain names
  3. Select your desired domain and add to cart
  4. Complete registration and verify purchase
  5. Verify your domain within 15 days via email

Key Information:

  • Domain prices: Standard TLDs (.com, .org) cost $20/year; specialty TLDs vary
  • All domains include free WHOIS privacy protection
  • Domains auto-renew annually
  • Multiple domains can be purchased and managed together
  • Editors can be invited to help manage the domain

Important Notes:

  • Most domains resolve within 1 hour (up to 72 hours maximum)
  • Domains can be renamed within the first 5 days
  • You can cancel within 5 days for a full refund
  • Domain verification must be completed within 15 days to prevent domain locking

When ready to build your website:

  1. Create a trial website
  2. Upgrade to a paid plan
  3. Connect your domain to the new site

If renewal fails, you have:

  • 15 days "past due" status with continued domain function
  • 40-day grace period for renewal
  • 55 total days before domain release

Remember: While you can add additional domains or Google Workspace email, features like email campaigns require a full website subscription.
