DNS Record Troubleshooting: Common Issues and Solutions Guide
DNS records store critical information about your domain and its services. When troubleshooting DNS record issues, follow these steps:
Common DNS Record Saving Issues
Replace placeholder values in the Host and Data fields with actual values. The Priority field is optional.
Host Field Format Guidelines:
- For custom records with mail.yourdomain.com, only enter "mail"
- Use @ when provider requests bare domain (yourdomain.com)
- "Host already in use" means another record uses the same host value
Data Field Issues:
- Remove trailing periods to fix "Invalid IP address" or "Hostname error"
- Ensure correct format for record type
- Check for conflicts with existing records
Resolving Record Conflicts
- Open Domains dashboard
- Select domain name
- Navigate to DNS Settings
- Review Custom Records
- Delete conflicting records
- Add new record
- Save changes
Note: Allow 24-72 hours for changes to propagate.
Priority Field Limitations
- Only modifiable for MX and SRV records
- Appears but inactive for other record types
AAAA Records Use complete IPv6 address format:
- Correct: 2620:12a:8000:0:0:0:0:3
- Incorrect: 2620:12a:8000::3
Managing Long TXT/DMARC Records
- Records limited to 255 characters
- Split longer records into multiple strings
- Use DNS record splitting tools or divide manually
- Add each string as separate record
Additional Tips:
- Remove extra characters causing "Enter valid alias data" errors
- Check for typos in DNS settings
- Split records exceeding 255 characters
