The domain connection between your Squarespace site and third-party domain host can fail for several reasons. Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve common issues.

Initial Connection Period

Wait 24-72 hours after connecting your domain for DNS settings to fully propagate. Error messages during this period are normal.

Common Connection Issues

Domain Already Connected

  • Check your other Squarespace sites
  • Disconnect the domain from the existing site
  • Contact support if you can't locate the connected site

CNAME Record Issues Required records:

  • One pointing to verify.squarespace.com
  • One pointing to ext-cust.squarespace.com

A Record Issues Delete conflicting A records:

  • Delete @ records that don't match Squarespace requirements
  • Remove empty host records
  • Preserve email/messaging records

Name Server Issues

For DNS Connect:

  • Don't modify custom name servers
  • Ensure provider's default name servers
  • Check provider-specific guides for:
    • GoDaddy
    • Namecheap
    • Network Solutions

SSL Certificate Issues

If you see security warnings or SSL certificate messages:

  • Verify DNS records match current requirements
  • Remove obsolete records
  • Ensure HTTPS compatibility

Still experiencing issues after 72 hours? Reset name servers to provider defaults and manually reconnect your domain, or contact your domain provider for assistance.
