Adding custom nameservers is an advanced DNS configuration that allows you to point subdomains to other servers. Here's how to properly manage additional nameservers for your domain.

Before Adding Custom Nameservers

First, disable DNSSEC protection to prevent errors:

  1. Navigate to domains dashboard
  2. Select your domain
  3. Go to DNS > DNSSEC
  4. Toggle off DNS Security Extensions
  5. Click Confirm

Adding Custom Nameservers

Follow these steps to add NS records:

  1. Collect NS records from your provider
  2. Go to domains dashboard
  3. Select domain > DNS > DNS Settings
  4. Scroll to Custom Records
  5. Click Add Record
  6. Select NS as Type
  7. Enter host value (subdomain)
  8. Input provider's NS record in Data field
  9. Save changes

Note: Changes may take 24-72 hours to propagate.

Removing Custom Nameservers

To restore original nameserver settings:

  1. Disable DNSSEC protection
  2. Go to DNS > Domain Nameservers
  3. Click "Use Squarespace nameservers"
  4. Save changes
  5. Re-enable DNSSEC if desired

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Unable to add nameserver: Wait for any pending domain transfers to complete
  • Can't see DNS Security Extensions: Remove DS records manually if using custom nameservers
  • Changes not taking effect: Allow up to 72 hours for propagation

Important Notes:

  • Only modify DNS settings if your domain is registered with Squarespace or connected via Nameserver Connect
  • For domains using DNS Connect, make changes through your third-party provider
  • Keep existing DNS records intact while adding new nameservers
  • Always backup your DNS configuration before making changes
