Moving your site content from WordPress, Blogger, or Tumblr to Squarespace is a straightforward process. Here's how to do it effectively:

Before Importing

  • Ensure you have an active Squarespace site
  • Content imports are one-time transfers, not continuous syncs

Platform-Specific Requirements:

WordPress:

  • Must use WordPress 3.2 or higher
  • Only accepts .xml files from WordPress
  • Disable all plugins before importing
  • Can import pages, posts, authors, categories, comments, and attached images
  • Does not import plugin content, gallery images, or CSS styles

Blogger:

  • Site must be public
  • Set Blog Feed to "Full" in settings
  • Imports posts, comments, and images as a new Blog Page
  • Does not import pages or CSS styles

Tumblr:

  • Remove all Q&A posts before importing
  • Imports text, audio, links, quotes, and embedded videos
  • Does not import direct Tumblr videos or photo posts

Import Process

WordPress Import:

Basic Method (for small sites):

  1. Go to Import/Export Content
  2. Select WordPress > Basic
  3. Enter WordPress URL and credentials
  4. Click Start Import

Advanced Method (recommended):

  1. Export content from WordPress as .xml
  2. In Squarespace, choose WordPress > Advanced
  3. Upload the .xml file
  4. Select markup language if needed
  5. Click Start Import

Blogger Import:

  1. Go to Import/Export Content
  2. Select Blogger
  3. Enter blog subdomain
  4. Click Start Import

Tumblr Import:

  1. Go to Import/Export Content
  2. Select Tumblr
  3. Enter Tumblr URL
  4. Click Start Import

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • System automatically retries failed imports 5 times
  • Large imports may take up to 6 hours
  • If import fails, verify platform requirements
  • For WordPress, try exporting smaller chunks if file is too large
  • Keep image count under 100 per post to prevent display issues

After Import:

  1. Activate imported pages
  2. Add pages to navigation
  3. Transfer blog posts if needed
  4. Set homepage
  5. Review and adjust content as needed

All imported content appears in the "Unlinked" section until activated.
