Name server records store essential domain information like email providers and web hosts. Here's how to manage custom name servers in your DNS settings:

Preparing Your Domain

  1. Disable DNSSEC protection first:
  • Go to domain dashboard
  • Select domain > DNS > DNSSEC
  • Turn off "DNS Security Extensions"
  • Confirm the change

Adding Custom Name Servers

  1. Get NS records from your provider
  2. Navigate to DNS Settings:
    • Domain dashboard > Domain name > DNS > DNS Settings
    • Scroll to "Custom Records"
    • Click "Add Record"
  3. Configure the record:
    • Select "NS" as Type
    • Enter host values from provider
    • Input NS records in Data field
    • Save changes

Note: Changes may take 24-72 hours to take effect.

Removing Custom Name Servers

Follow these three steps:

  1. Disable DNSSEC:

    • Domain dashboard > DNS > DNSSEC
    • Turn off "DNS Security Extensions"
    • Confirm changes
  2. Reset to default name servers:

    • Go to Domain Name Servers
    • Select "Use Squarespace Name Servers"
    • Save changes
  3. Re-enable DNSSEC:

    • Return to DNSSEC settings
    • Toggle "DNS Security Extensions" on
    • Confirm changes

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • "Could not add name servers": Wait for any pending domain transfers to complete
  • DNSSEC toggle not visible: Remove DS records manually from DNSSEC settings
  • Allow up to 72 hours for changes to propagate

Remember: If using DNS connection instead of name server connection, edit DNS settings through your third-party domain provider.
