Optimize Email Marketing: Subscriber Verification Best Practices & Security Guide
Email subscriber verification reduces spam marking by requiring new subscribers to confirm their interest through reCAPTCHA or confirmation emails. Here's what you need to know about both methods.
Verification Options
Two main verification methods are available:
- Google reCAPTCHA: An invisible security feature preventing bot submissions
- Confirmation email: Requires subscribers to verify through an email after signing up
At least one option must be enabled for newsletter blocks and promotional pop-ups using Squarespace storage.
Google reCAPTCHA
This invisible verification system works with:
- Form blocks with mandatory email fields
- Newsletter blocks using Squarespace storage
- Promotional pop-ups
reCAPTCHA is enabled by default for new form and newsletter blocks. You can enable or disable confirmation emails when using reCAPTCHA.
Confirmation Emails
Confirmation emails verify subscribers before adding them to your email marketing list. They work with:
- Form blocks with mandatory email fields
- Newsletter blocks
- Promotional pop-ups
- Acuity Scheduling opt-ins
- Member site subscriptions
- Homepage newsletter subscriptions
Customizing Confirmation Emails
To customize your confirmation message:
- Access Email Marketing settings
- Click Verification Options
- Select Customize Email
- Edit message text and style
- Modify subject line and preview text
- Test the email using the Test button
- Save changes
Troubleshooting
If subscribers don't receive confirmation emails:
- Check spam folders
- Add [email protected] to contacts
- Verify email address accuracy
- Try subscribing with a different email address
For 404 errors when confirming subscriptions:
- Check distribution list connection
- Reset form storage connection
- Verify domain pointing
- Ensure confirmation links aren't broken
Note: Verification options aren't available for purchase-related subscriptions, manually added addresses, or imported contacts. EU users should ensure compliance with local regulations.
