Transfer or Connect Domain to Squarespace: A Complete Guide
Domain transfer and connection options for third-party domains can be managed in two ways: transferring the domain to Squarespace or connecting it while keeping it with your current provider.
Note: Google Domains customers don't need to take any action as their domains have automatically transferred to Squarespace.
Transferring Your Domain (Recommended Option)
Benefits:
- Consolidated management of domain and website
- Free SSL certificates
- Free Whois privacy protection
- Possible one-year free domain service with annual subscriptions
Requirements:
- Domain TLD must be on Squarespace's supported list
- Non-premium domains only
- Domain age > 60 days
- Registration period < 9 years
Connecting Your Domain
This option (also called domain mapping) keeps your domain with the current provider while pointing it to Squarespace.
Considerations:
- DNS settings remain with your current provider
- Requires managing two separate services
- Provider must allow full DNS access
- Limited Squarespace support for provider-specific issues
Choosing Between Transfer and Connection
Transfer your domain if:
- It meets all transfer requirements
- You want simplified management
- You prefer consolidated billing
Connect your domain if:
- It doesn't meet transfer requirements
- You have a complex registration setup
- You need to maintain your current hosting setup
Both options allow you to use your domain with Squarespace, but transferring offers more integrated management and additional benefits when possible.
Note: You can still transfer a connected domain later if it meets the requirements.
