A custom domain email address (like [email protected]) can be used with your Squarespace site in two ways: keeping your current email provider or migrating to Google Workspace.

Keeping Your Current Email Provider:

  • Continue using your existing email service without any interruption
  • Only requires CNAME and A record changes when connecting domain to Squarespace
  • No need to modify name servers or Mail eXchanger records
  • For Squarespace domains, add necessary DNS records provided by your email provider

Migrating to Google Workspace:

  • Maintain your existing email address while creating a new Google-managed account
  • Manage billing through Squarespace
  • Access emails, calendars, and documents through Google's interface
  • Works with both third-party and Squarespace domains

Before Migration Requirements:

  • Active domain setup on Squarespace
  • Administrator access to both email and Squarespace accounts
  • Completed domain transfer (if applicable)
  • Keep current email service active during transition

Migration Process:

  1. Create Google Workspace Account
  • Set up account with same custom domain
  • Create email addresses for all users
  • Allow up to 72 hours for email routing transition
  1. Import Content
  • Export emails, contacts, and other data from current provider
  • Transfer email history using Google's data transfer service
  • Verify all content is accessible in new account
  1. Cancel Old Email Service
  • Wait 72 hours after setup
  • Confirm emails are properly routing to Google Workspace
  • Verify all content is transferred
  • Remove old Mail eXchanger records (Squarespace domains only)
  • Maintain domain-related subscriptions for third-party domains

Monitor email delivery during transition as routing updates may take up to 72 hours to complete fully.
