DNS Record Troubleshooting Guide

If your DNS records aren't working correctly, here's a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to resolve common issues.

Record Not Saving Issues

  1. Replace Placeholder Values
  • Always replace gray placeholder text in Host and Data fields
  • These are just format examples, not actual values
  • Priority field is optional
  1. Correct Host Field Format
  • Domain name automatically appends after Host values
  • Use "@" for bare domain (yourdomain.com)
  • Avoid duplicate Host fields across different record types

Common Error Messages and Solutions

Invalid IP Address or Host Name:

  • Check Data field format
  • Remove trailing periods
  • Verify information accuracy

Conflicting Records:

  1. Open domains dashboard
  2. Select domain name
  3. Navigate to DNS Settings
  4. Review Custom Records
  5. Remove conflicting records
  6. Add new record
  7. Save changes
  8. Wait 24-72 hours for propagation

Priority Field Limitations:

  • Only modifiable for MX and SRV records
  • Appears but inactive for other record types

AAAA Records:

  • Use fully expanded IPv6 addresses
  • Example:
    • Incorrect: 2620:12a:8000::3
    • Correct: 2620:12a:8000:0:0:0:0:3

Long TXT/DMARC Records:

  • 255-character limit per record
  • Split longer records into multiple strings
  • Use online DNS record splitting tools
  • Add each part separately

Invalid Alias Data:

  • Check record length (max 255 characters)
  • Remove extra characters
  • Look for trailing periods
  • Split if necessary
