How to Add and Manage Categories and Tags in Squarespace

Collection items can be organized with categories and tags to help visitors find content more easily. Categories are best for broad topics or types, while tags are more flexible for specific details.

Adding Categories and Tags:

For Blog Posts and Events:

  • Open Pages panel and select the page
  • Click Settings > Options
  • Add categories or tags separated by commas
  • Press Enter to save each entry

For Products:

  • Open the store page
  • Double-click product
  • Under Organization, add categories
  • Enter tags in the Tags field
  • Click Save

For Videos (categories only):

  • Open video page
  • Click Edit Video
  • Select or create categories
  • Click Save

Formatting Guidelines:

  • Categories: max 25 characters
  • Tags: max 80 characters
  • Case-sensitive
  • Avoid special characters
  • Don't use commas in names

Display Options:

Blog Pages:

  • Categories shown as metadata
  • Tags display on individual posts

Events:

  • Categories and tags show at bottom of individual events
  • Not visible on main Events Page

Store Pages:

  • Category navigation appears at top/sidebar
  • Tags not displayed publicly

Managing Categories and Tags:

To Edit in Bulk:

  1. Open page settings
  2. Click Advanced
  3. Select Manage Categories/Tags
  4. Edit, delete, or merge as needed

Best Practices:

  • Use categories sparingly for main topics
  • Apply tags freely for detailed organization
  • Update links after renaming categories/tags
  • Consider search optimization when choosing terms
