Primary domains act as the main address for your website, with all other custom domains redirecting to it. When a visitor accesses your site through any connected domain, the primary domain will display in their browser's address bar.

Your first custom domain automatically becomes the primary domain. To change your primary domain:

  1. Open the Domains panel
  2. Click the "..." next to your chosen domain
  3. Select "Set as primary domain"
  4. Confirm by clicking "Set"

Important considerations:

  • Only custom domains can be primary domains
  • All pages will display the primary domain
  • Third-party domains must be properly connected first (may take up to 72 hours)
  • Search engines only display the primary domain in results
  • Secondary domains use 301 redirects to the primary domain

Note for site owners:

  • Built-in .squarespace.com domains remain visible when logged in for security
  • Analytics combine traffic from all active domains
  • You can't use different domains for specific pages
  • Subdomain can be primary only if hosted by a third party

Search result visibility:

  • If incorrect domains appear in search results, use Google Search Console to specify preferred domain
  • To hide built-in domains from search results, request a reindex through Google Search Console

Setting a primary domain helps establish your brand identity and ensures consistent site access across all connected domains. No domain removal is necessary when changing primary status - setting a new primary automatically updates the system.

For optimal SEO performance, maintain your chosen primary domain consistently and use Google Search Console to manage search result appearances.
