Protect specific pages on your website by requiring visitors to enter a password before accessing them. This feature helps maintain content privacy while keeping other pages public.

Password requirements and limitations:

  • Must be 30 characters or less
  • Case-sensitive
  • Cannot use your Squarespace account password
  • Same password applies to all visitors
  • Not available for member site pages

To set a page password:

  1. Open Pages panel
  2. Click the desired page
  3. Click settings icon next to page title
  4. Scroll to Password field
  5. Enter password
  6. Click Save

A lock icon appears next to password-protected pages in the Pages panel. Consider moving protected pages to the Unlinked section to hide them from navigation menus.

Testing and access:

  • Test in private browser window
  • Enter password and click arrow or press Enter
  • Sessions expire after several hours
  • No manual logout option
  • Collaborators with viewer permissions need the password

To change or remove a password:

  1. Open Pages panel
  2. Select protected page
  3. Click Settings icon
  4. Scroll to Password
  5. Edit or delete password
  6. Click Save

Search engine considerations:

  • Password protection prevents page indexing
  • Existing pages may remain in search results temporarily
  • Collection pages and their items become protected
  • Summary blocks can display protected items, but access requires password

Collection pages:

  • Password applies to all items within collection
  • Cannot protect individual items
  • Cannot use different passwords for items
  • Includes Blog, Event, Portfolio, and Store pages

For Index Pages (version 7.0):

  • Can protect Main Index via page settings
  • Protected subpage visibility depends on index style

Troubleshooting tips:

  • Check for global homepage password if issues persist
  • Disable password managers when editing
  • Use plain text when pasting passwords
  • Type manually to avoid formatting issues
