URL redirection sends visitors from one URL to another. In Squarespace, you can redirect domains, subdomains, or specific pages to any destination. Here's how to set it up properly:

Before Starting

  • URL redirections can take up to 72 hours to update
  • You need an active, registered domain
  • Built-in Squarespace domains cannot be redirected

Setting Up Domain Redirection

  1. Access Domain Settings:
  • Open domain panel
  • Click the domain name
  • Select Website
  • Scroll to URL Redirection Rules
  • Click Add Rule
  1. Configure Redirect:
  • In "Redirect from": Enter @ (for primary domain) or subdomain name
  • In "Redirect to": Enter complete destination URL
  • Choose redirect type (301 permanent or 302 temporary)
  • Enable SSL (recommended)
  • Select route redirection option (keep or remove paths)
  • Click Save

Redirecting Subdomains

Follow the same steps above, but:

  • Enter subdomain name in "Redirect from" field
  • Use complete URL with specific page slug in "Redirect to" field

Route Redirection Options

  • Keep paths: Maintains original URL structure
  • Remove paths: All URLs redirect to new main address
  • Works best when destination site has matching URL structure

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If redirect isn't working:

  • Clear browser cache
  • Check for URL typos
  • Verify no conflicting DNS records
  • Ensure proper DNS configuration if using custom nameservers

For domains using custom nameservers:

  1. Add required CNAME and A records
  2. Remove existing conflicting records
  3. Allow up to 72 hours for changes to propagate

To remove redirects:

  1. Open domain panel
  2. Click domain name
  3. Select Website
  4. Find URL Redirection section
  5. Click trash icon next to redirect rule
