How to Set Your Primary Domain on Squarespace: A Step-by-Step Guide
Select a custom domain to establish your site's main web address. When you add multiple custom domains, one must be primary - this will be the domain displayed in browsers and search results.
Key Facts About Primary Domains:
- All custom domains redirect to the primary domain
- The first custom domain added becomes primary by default
- Only custom domains can be primary (not squarespace.com domains)
- One domain must be primary - you can't use different domains for specific pages
Before Setting a Primary Domain:
- Squarespace domains must be ownership-verified
- Third-party domains must be properly connected (takes up to 72 hours)
Steps to Set a Primary Domain:
- Open Domains panel
- Click [...] next to desired domain
- Select "Set as Primary Domain"
- Confirm by clicking "Set"
Important Notes:
- Secondary domains use 301 redirects to the primary domain
- Only the primary domain appears in search results
- Built-in squarespace.com domains show when logged in for security
- Analytics track traffic from all valid domains collectively
Domain Behavior:
- Built-in domains automatically hide when custom domains are added
- Removing all custom domains reverts to built-in domain as primary
- Third-party subdomains can be primary
- Squarespace subdomains cannot be primary
- Setting a new primary domain automatically removes primary status from previous domain
Search Engine Considerations:
- Use Google Search Console to specify preferred domain display
- Request reindexing if built-in domain appears in search results
- Only primary domains show in search results
This system ensures consistent branding and clear site identity while maintaining proper SEO practices and analytics tracking.
