How to Verify Domain Ownership with TXT Records in DNS Settings
Domain verification using a TXT record is an alternative method to connect and verify your domain with Squarespace when CNAME records aren't working or available. This process typically takes up to 72 hours to complete.
When to Use TXT Record Verification:
- CNAME record verification failed after 72 hours
- Your domain provider doesn't support CNAME records
- You can't modify existing CNAME records
- You're connecting a subdomain
Step-by-Step Verification Process:
- Access DNS Settings
- Login to your domain provider account
- Navigate to DNS management (may be called Zone file settings or DNS settings)
- Add TXT Record
- Go to your Squarespace domain dashboard
- Select your domain and click DNS
- Copy the unique verification code under the Host column
- Create a new TXT record with:
- Host/Alias: @ or leave blank
- Record Type: TXT
- Value: Your copied verification code
- Save the new record
- Verify Connection
- Return to Squarespace DNS settings
- Click Update
- Check the Current Data column for a green "Correct" label
- Wait up to 72 hours for full propagation
Important Notes:
- Verification can take up to 72 hours
- Keep existing DNS records intact
- Ensure the verification code is copied exactly
- This method works for both domains and subdomains
