Protect Your Content: How to Set Up Page Passwords in Squarespace
Password protection prevents unauthorized access to specific pages on your site. Here's everything you need to know about setting up and managing page passwords.
Key Points:
- Passwords protect individual pages from public access
- Protected pages show a lock icon in the Pages panel
- The same password applies to all visitors
- Passwords are case-sensitive and limited to 30 characters
- Never use your account password as a page password
- Viewer-level collaborators need the password to access protected pages
Setting a Page Password:
- Open the Pages panel
- Select the page to protect
- Click the settings icon
- Enter password in the Password field
- Click Save
Testing Your Password:
- Open the page in a private browser
- Enter password on the lock screen
- Sessions expire after 4 hours
- No manual logout option available
Password Protection Effects:
- Prevents search engines from indexing new pages
- Already indexed pages may still appear in search results
- Collection pages protect all individual items
- Index pages can protect main Index and subpages
- Summary/archive blocks show protected items but require password for access
Important Notes:
- Can't create individual passwords for collection items
- Password protection unavailable for member site pages
- Site-wide password protection is available separately
- Enterprise plans offer single sign-on options
Troubleshooting:
- Disable password managers when editing page passwords
- Paste passwords as plain text to avoid formatting errors
- Check for site-wide passwords if access issues persist
- Password dots may appear longer than actual password length
Page passwords offer simple but effective content protection while maintaining public access to other site areas.
