A third-party domain connection can fail for several reasons, but most issues can be resolved through systematic troubleshooting. Here's how to identify and fix common domain connection problems.

Initial Waiting Period

When first linking an external domain, DNS settings may show error messages. This is normal, as changes typically take 24-72 hours to propagate fully.

Common Connection Issues

Domain Already Connected If you see a message stating the domain is already connected to another Squarespace site:

  • Check your other Squarespace sites
  • Unlink the domain from the previous site
  • Contact support if you can't locate the connected site

CNAME Record Issues Two CNAME records are required:

  • One pointing to verify.squarespace.com
  • One pointing to ext-cust.squarespace.com

A Record Problems Review and manage A records in your domain account:

  • Delete @ records that don't match required connection records
  • Remove blank host records
  • Preserve Mail/Email records to maintain email service

Troubleshooting DNS Settings

If you see "Record Not Found" labels:

  1. Open the Domains panel and check affected domain
  2. View DNS settings
  3. Identify missing records
  4. Access domain provider account
  5. Correct any mismatched settings
  6. Wait 24-72 hours for changes to propagate

Name Server Issues

For Nameserver Connect:

  • Reset to default provider name servers if not connected after 72 hours
  • Manually connect domain by adjusting DNS records

For DNS Connect:

  • Avoid editing custom name servers
  • Ensure name servers point to correct host
  • Contact domain provider if errors persist

Resolution Steps

  1. Verify all DNS settings are correct
  2. Allow sufficient propagation time
  3. Update DNS settings only after 72-hour intervals
  4. Confirm domain provider's name servers are properly set
  5. Contact domain provider support for persistent issues

For SSL certificate warnings or security issues, consult the SSL Troubleshooting guide for specific resolution steps.
