Images and files uploaded to Squarespace are stored on content delivery networks (CDNs) and assigned specific URLs as static assets. Here's everything you need to know about managing these URLs.
Image URLs
- Multiple sizes are stored automatically
- Each size has a unique static URL
- Improves site performance and page loading times
- URLs begin with images.squarespace-cdn.com, static.squarespace.com, or static1.squarespace.com
- Format parameter indicates image width (e.g., format=1000w)
Video URLs
- Videos are converted to .mp4 format
- Available in 1080p and 360p resolutions
- Optimized for all devices and browsers
- Resolution displays automatically
Finding Static URLs
- Right-click an image and open in new tab
- URL appears in browser address bar
- Alternatively, view page source or use browser tools
Deleting URLs
For Images and Videos:
- Delete directly from Asset library for immediate removal
- Unused assets are automatically removed in 8-38 days
- Deleted image blocks: 8 days for removal
- Deleted pages: 30 days in trash + 8 days for full removal
For Files:
- Remain in CDN temporarily after deletion
- Not visible on site but accessible via direct link
- Full removal takes 8-38 days
- Delete all instances and empty trash for complete removal
Expedited Removal Request Send email with:
- Subject: "Static URL Removal Request"
- Domain name
- Static URL(s) to remove
- Multiple URLs separated by commas
Note: Complete URL deactivation time varies and can't be expedited. Search engines may continue displaying URLs until re-indexing occurs.
