Domain transfer and redirection on Squarespace comes in several forms, each serving a different purpose. Here's what you need to know to choose the right option.

Moving vs. Linking Your Domain

Moving a domain integrates billing and permissions with your site. This is ideal when you want:

  • Unified billing and permissions
  • Shared collaborator access
  • Access to free domain or Google Workspace offers

Linking is only available for parked Squarespace domains and keeps billing/permissions separate. Choose this when you want:

  • Separate payment methods for domain and website
  • Different team access levels for domain and site management

Forwarding vs. Pointing Your Domain

Forwarding:

  • Visitors see the new site with an updated URL
  • Requires domain name/subdomain and destination URL
  • Works with both Squarespace and non-Squarespace sites

Pointing:

  • Visitors see the new site but URL remains unchanged
  • Requires domain name/subdomain and CNAME/IP address
  • Works with non-Squarespace sites

Additional Transfer Options:

  1. Same Site, Different Domain:
  • Change your primary domain while maintaining presence
  1. Leaving Squarespace:
  • Transfer domain to new provider
  1. URL Management:
  • Create URL redirects for inactive pages
  • Set new homepage
  • Create and set subdomains
  • Set up path forwarding
  1. Subdomain Pointing:
  • Point subdomains to other Squarespace sites
  • Requires proper record setup on both sites

For third-party domains, follow your provider's documentation for forwarding or pointing. When renaming a site with a new domain, the old domain automatically redirects as long as it remains linked.
